Amalgam has been used for dental fillings (silver fillings) for decades, but concerns around its environmental impact, safety and aesthetics have led many to move towards the use of composite fillings instead.
In fact the UK has committed, alongside many other countries, to phase out the use of amalgam by 2034.
At Oakwood Dental Practice we’ve made the decision to go amalgam-free now to help reduce our impact on the environment and provide our patients with the best dental treatment possible. Here’s a little more information about why we’ve stopped using amalgam for fillings:
Environmental impact
We’re passionate about reducing our impact on the environment. Amalgam is a known environmental pollutant, and while we dispose of it responsibly, it is estimated that two-thirds of dental mercury is eventually released into the environment which can cause water contamination and air pollution.
Reducing the amount of tooth removal
Amalgam fillings require more of the healthy tooth to be removed to secure the filling in comparison to composite fillings. Use of composite fillings allows a more conservative approach, and for more of the natural tooth to be saved.
Safety concerns
Amalgam has high mercury content, which is a toxic metal. While they are considered safe, steps have been taken in many countries to limit the use of amalgam fillings in pregnant women, children and those with autoimmune conditions, or neurological concerns.
Preventative care
Our main focus at Oakwood Dental Practice is preventative care, helping you to improve and maintain your oral health and prevent unnecessary and costly treatments further down the line. Here’s how we work to reduce your risk of needing fillings:
Team work
Our team of Dentists and Dental Therapists are just that, a team. We work together to achieve the best possible results by working on the health of your teeth and gums. You play a big part in this too, which is why we provide bespoke education so that you can effectively care for your teeth at home.
Guided Biofilm Therapy
We use Guided Biofilm Therapy as part of our hygiene appointments. It enables us to show you where bacteria is building up to help improve your brushing techniques, before gently removing the bacteria, stains and tartar with warm water, air, and powder. It’s a more thorough, and comfortable approach to dental hygiene helping to maintain healthy, strong gums and teeth.
Advanced preventative treatments
Regular routine visits help us to spot potential issues before they arise. We provide advanced treatments that enable us to reverse the early stages of decay, helping to prevent the need for fillings further down the line.
