Helping anxious patients
Dental anxiety is a widespread issue, with over half of the population experiencing some form of fear, anxiety, or dread when visiting the dentist. Roughly 12-15% of adults suffer from more extreme fears and phobias which can lead to people avoiding visiting the dentist altogether, leading to poor oral health which can then impact overall health.
We see lots of patients here at Oakwood Dental Practice who have suffered with dental anxiety and helped them to feel more relaxed and comfortable, improving their dental experience. Here are some of the things that we have found to be important in the process:
Building relationships
Every member of our team is dedicated to making your experience with us a positive one. That starts the moment you walk through the door with our warm and welcoming reception team. You’ll consistently see the same dentist and dental therapist, who will be able to understand the reason behind your anxiety and will do all that they can to put you at ease.
We like to think of ourselves as a little family at Oakwood Dental Practice, and it’s that warmth, care and laughter that shines through to our patients too.
Clear communication, giving control to the patient
Giving you clear information on the process of your examination or treatment helps to give you control over the process. If you prefer, we can also talk through things as we go so there are no surprises. Everyone is different, and we’ll find out what best works for you to help you feel in control throughout your appointment.
Relaxed environment
Working in a relaxed environment not only helps our patients to relax, but also makes for a better working environment for our team. Each of our clinicians works alongside music, which you can choose if you find that it helps you to relax more, or of course you can bring earphones to listen to your own music. Family or friends are also welcome to accompany you if you find that helps too.
No rush
We’ll allow the time we need to make sure that we are able to clearly explain everything to you, and that you don’t feel like you’re being rushed. If you need to take a breather during your appointment, we can facilitate that too.
Talk to us
The key to all of this is us knowing that you’re feeling anxious. Make sure you let us know about your anxiety or phobia when you book your appointment. It’s much more common than you think, and the team here are primed with the tools and experience to make sure your visit with us is a good one.
